Smt. Sumithra Subramaniam,  a Bharatanatyam artiste hailing from Chennai & she is the daughter and disciple of Kalaimamani Smt. Jayanthi Subramaniam. She had advanced training in abhinaya from the legendary Guru Padma Bhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan and nattuvangam from Guru Bhagavathulu Sri Seetharama Sharma.

Born in an atmosphere reverberating with music and dance, Sumithra took to dance as easily as fish does to water.She made her first stage appearance in 1995 at Prashanthi Nilayam, Puttaparti, on the occasion of the 70th Birthday Celebrations of Bhagawan Sri. Sri. Sri. SathyaSai Baba. Since her arangetram in 2004 she has performed extensively for cultural organizations and festivals within and outside Chennai. Her stellar role play of Jonnathan seagull in JyothirGamaya (a production based on the western novel JonnathanLivingstun Seagull by Richard Bach),Panchali in PanchaliSabadam and Surpanaka in Aranyakandam have won critical acclaim.

Sumithra is a graded artiste of the Doordarshan. She has been part of the DVD ‘Bharatanatyam Adavus with music’ produced by Kala Darsana and ‘Bharatanatyam Nattuvangam - The Cadence and Conduct’ by e-Parampara.

She is the Winner of the prestigious Spirit of Youth Festival, Music Academy, 2012 and has several awards to her credit such as NATYA SUNDARAM from Bharatanjali Trust, 2013, NAVANOOPURA from Dasyam, 2014, YUVA KALA BHARATHI from Bharath Kalachar, 2015, NATYA RATNA from Trinity Arts, 2016, The promising young dance artist award from Brahma Gana Sabha, 2018 to name a few.

Sumithra’s quest for learning and drive for creative excellence keep her motivated to continuously hone her skills. Actively engaged in teaching and choreography of group productions in Kala Darsana, she is constantly experimenting with creative methods of imparting the art form to the students and making it relevant to the present day.
