Born and brought up in Brisbane, Australia, with no musical background to claim, he developed a passion for Carnatic music. Since he was good in academics too, he pursued medicine alongside.

Jayan began singing film songs and popular kritis of veteran Carnatic musicians that he heard from recordings. He later approached violinist-composer L. Shankar, who not only agreed to mentor him but also convinced his parents to allow him to chase his musical dreams. Similarly, T.K. Murthy, the mridangam maestro also extended his support to Jayan.

Though he finished  medical course, took  music full time under the guidance of Dr. Shankar, says Jayan in accented English. He owes to his gurus  Dr. Shankar, Murthy and Vaikkom Jayachandran  who helped him understand the nuances of the genre.

He is also the founder of KWJ Music, a venture from promoting Carnatic Music.
