The Nadhaswaram is the traditional Dravidan musical instrument. Injikudi E.M.Subramaniam hails from the family of traditional nadhaswara vidwan's. He was born at Injikudi, a small village in the Tiruvarur District of Tamilnadu in the year 1968. He is the twentieth generation nadhaswara artist from the known records. The distinct Injikudi style of performance is embedded in his genes. Injikudi Subramaniam learnt the art from His father Shri Muthukumarasami Pillai and his uncle Shri Ayyasami Pillai from the age of six. He perfected the art from the training he received from the highly respected Guru Shri Thirumakalam V. Somaskantham Pillay for three years at Palani Temple's Nadhaswaram college. He is a master degree holder and gold medalist from Annamalai University in Vocal music also. He has mastered the art through the expert training received from legends like Thanjavur M. Thiyagarajan, Thanjavur V. Sankara Iyer, and Sangeetha Kalanithi T.K. Govindarao. He then had special training from Sembanarkovil SRD Vaidhyanatha Pillai in 'Rathimelam', the non-lyrical musical notes performed using nadhaswaram alone,exclusive at temples. Injikudi Subramaniam is currently engaged in a Doctorate level research on the topic 'The Unique Identity of Nadaswaram in South Indian Musical Instruments'. His Doctorate Study is being guided by Scholar Thanjavur B M Sundaram, a renowned artist composer musical researcher and critic. Subramaniam had his maiden performance at the age of eleven, in the school republic day function. He has given stage performance and concerts from the age of thirteen. He is a regular performer at Thyagaraja Aradhana at Thiruvaiyaru and at the December Season musical concert at Chennai. He was the lead player of Nadhaswaram in the Times of India's fusion concert 'The Changing' orchestrated by A.R. Rahman. He is a notable 'A' grade artist in the All India Rodio panel. He has given international concert at Srilanka, Singapore, Australia, United States of America, Paris and Norway. He was a tutor of Music in Government Music college for twelve years from 1997 to 2009. Subramaniam has taught the fine art of Nadhaswaram to hundreds of students of India and also a few international students. He has performed fusion concert with leading carnatic music artists. He is the recipient of several awards and titles. Kalaimamani from the Govt. of Tamilnadu, Kalki Memorial Award are the few of the awards and titles conferred on to him.
