Savita Narasimhan
(Vocal - Carnatic)
Savita Narasimhan is an original voice amidst a galaxy of young vocalists in the forefront of Carnatic music now. Born into a family of connoisseurs of music, and starting Carnatic music lessons at an early age from Sankara Sarma, a worthy practitioner of the Alathur school, Savita enjoyed a privileged musical upbringing, training with Rama Ravi, a prime exemplar of the iconic Veena Dhanammal school, and O V Subramaniam, the patriarch of an orthodox yet evocative bani of music. Her training also benefited from the bhakti orientation of Tiruppugazh singing, which she imbibed from A S Raghavan, an outstanding exponent of the genre. To crown it all, Savita has since 1995 been under the tutelage of Chitravina N Ravikiran, the child prodigy turned maestro who is synonymous with classicism and the chitravina, the string instrument he has globalised. She is a recipient of the scholarship for Carnatic classical music instituted by the Department of Culture, Government of India.
